that will provide $225M in new funding for the Iron Dome defense system. We deeply appreciate the strong bipartisan support the appropriation has enjoyed from all quarters -- the Obama Administration, the Senate and the House.
The Iron Dome defense system has proven itself to be a highly effective means of shooting down Hamas rockets that were intended to, and could have, killed or injured thousands of Israelis. It is vital to the safety and security of Israel, which has -- now and in the past -- endured missile attacks against border towns, as well as populated areas deep within the country. Hamas rockets have caused death and destruction and have resulted in the reality of Israeli citizens living, day to day, in fear and under constant threat of sudden violence against themselves and their families.It is particularly meaningful that this new funding is being approved of now, without delay, as Hamas rockets continue to fly. Not only will it help provide Israel with the strategic protection it needs but it is also an important statement of American support for its ally, Israel, during this time of immense crisis.
Approval of new Iron Dome funding has been a top priority for Israel's supporters in the United States. Agudath Israel is pleased and proud to have played its part in this effort. Among other things, we mobilized our community to help promote and garner support for this critical legislation by communicating extensively with members of both the House and Senate -- including sending to Washington delegations of our membership from various states to meet with prominent congressional leaders and to urge swift passage.
We congratulate Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for making passage of this legislation a reality. We now look to the House of Representatives to quickly pass its Iron Dome funding bill and send it to President Obama expeditiously.
