Agudath Israel of America congratulates rep Paul Ryan

Agudath Israel of America congratulates Representative Paul Ryan on his new leadership role as Speaker of the House.
Speaker Ryan has a proven and consistent record of support for Israel. He understands well the great strategic value of the US- Israel alliance and the two countries' shared democratic values and historical ties. Perhaps more importantly, he has demonstrated understanding of the grave dangers Israel faces -- the violence in the West Bank and Gaza, the scourge of terrorism, and the Iranian nuclear threat.

Using WhatsApp to defy internet ban

Like most people, Moshe spends a lot of his time messaging friends on his smartphone. Unlike most people, he can’t openly talk about it.
link
As a Hasidic Jew living in Brooklyn, Moshe’s online activities are extremely limited. His ultra-orthodox sect has long banned internet use, on the grounds that exposure to the secular world would lead to moral corruption, sexual promiscuity, and infidelity. The insular community has allowed for some exceptions, acknowledging that smartphones and computers are now essential for business, though its leadership still requires members to install web filters on their devices, blocking all social media services and all but a few whitelisted websites. Internet use among children remains strictly forbidden.

Biggest nightmare for frum papers: Hillary Clinton will be elected president

CJR_The biggest nightmare the country’s major ultra-Orthodox Jewish newspapers and magazines face these days is that Hillary Clinton will be elected president. It’s not just her politics that worries these publications, although they are far to the right of Clinton on most issues. More troublesome is her gender. For reasons of tradition and modesty, and in line with some interpretations of Jewish law, the ultra-Orthodox publications do not run pictures of women in their pages. When they publish articles about Clinton, they are likely to run images of her campaign posters, a picture of her house in Chappaqua, NY, or a photo of her husband, Bill. Occasionally, they will run a caricature of Hillary Clinton from a political cartoon, but not a photo.  It was one thing to avoid printing Clinton’s picture when she was First Lady or a United States senator, or even Secretary of State. But how can you not show the President of the United States?

In interviews, the editors of four major English-language ultra-Orthodox publications, three of them published in New York and one in Jerusalem, said that they are reevaluating their no-women policy in light of the Clinton candidacy, but would not make any final decisions alone. As with all important decisions, they will take the question to the boards of rabbinical advisors with whom final authority over the publications’ content rests. One of the editors, a rabbi himself, said that a Clinton victory could spell a change in the longstanding no-women policy in his paper and the others. “I think we’re going to have to rethink it,” Rabbi Yitzchok Frankfurter, the executive editor of Ami Magazine, told me. Not to do so, he said, “would be disrespectful.” read more HERE at Columbia Journalism review.

Rabbi raced into the burning building to rescue Sefer Torah

USATODAY NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — As a fire raged through a historic city synagogue Friday afternoon, the congregation's longtime rabbi apparently raced into the burning building to rescue the Sefer Torah.
"I saw him watching the firemen go in. I knew inside they had the Sefer Torah," said Donny Zinkin, whose condominium is just doors away from Congregation Poile Zedek, an Orthodox Ashkenazic synagogue in New Brunswick.

Zinkin said he asked Rabbi Abraham Mykoff if he needed help because he knew the Sefer Torah, a handwritten holy scroll, would be the one thing he would be most concerned about. He said Mykoff then ran into the synagogue and grabbed the Sefer Torah. "When he came out, he gave it to me," said Zinkin, who has lived near the synagogue for 15 years and has known the rabbi, a Highland Park resident, for many years and called him "a very good guy."

Ramat Beit Shemesh Residents Terrified in Wake of Stabbing Attack

Residents of a city near Jerusalem are living in fear for their safety, following a terrorist attack in one of its neighborhoods, the Israeli website nrg reported.
The attack took place in Ramat Beit Shemesh (in Beit Shemesh) on Thursday morning. Due to the presence of a large number of illegal Palestinian workers, many of whom have been squatting in construction sites near pre-schools, residents of the area are extremely anxious.

Their anxiety is exacerbated by the absence of police in the neighborhood. According to nrg, its police station resembles a glorified outpost, in a dilapidated, abandoned building, and therefore cannot adequately service the neighborhood’s tens of thousands of residents.

Thursday’s terror attack was carried out by two Palestinians who initially attempted to board a school bus, but were repelled by the driver. They then continued down the street, where they stabbed an 18-year-old man outside the Kol Yehuda synagogue.

They were later shot by security forces at a nearby bus stop.

AGUDATH ISRAEL STATEMENT ON THE UNESCO RESOLUTION

Today's resolution by UNESCO, despite its revision from an even more egregious draft, deserves only condemnation.

The final draft was not the result of any new recognition or understanding by Arab leaders or other supporters of the resolution of the Jewish people's connection to the Western Wall, the Temple Mount, Jerusalem or any other holy sites. It was simply the outcome of arm twisting and backroom deals.  And even the resultant "compromise" is odious.

The resolution seeks only to empower Palestinian leaders' attempt to "de-Judaize" Judaism's holiest places.  Indeed, the proposal itself makes no mention of any Jewish connection to Jerusalem, the Temple Mount or the Western Wall. And its new "tempered" language continues firmly on that path by declaring the Cave of the Patriarchs and Rachel's Tomb - the sacred burial ground of Judaism's patriarchs and matriarch - as Muslim holy sites. The resolution is a further attempt in the effort to sever the connection between the Jewish people and their holy sites and ancestral heritage.

BD'H Mrs. Henny Machlis a"h Machnisas Orchim hostess of Yerushalyim

Mrs. Henny Machlis a'h passed away erev shabbos parshas Noach after an illness she was 59. For more than two decades Rabbi Mordechai and Henny Machlis have opened their home in the Maalot Dafna neighborhood of yerushalayim, to an amazing assortment of Shabbos guests. Every week 60-100 guests show up for Friday night dinner, and an equal number for Shabbas lunch.  Travelers, yeshiva students, university students, the homeless, the mentally ill, Hadassah ladies, tourists, lost souls, U.J.A. mission visitors, new immigrants, drunkards, widows, orphans, Sar El volunteers for Israel, Birthright participants, and truth seekers all came to the Machlis home for a shabbos meal. Henny Machlis's kitchen was an apt metaphor for her heart. A glimpse into the kitchen, less than half the size of a normal American kitchen, leaves one wondering how 200 Shabbos meals a week can issue from such a room. Similarly, one wonders how so much love and compassion for literally thousands of individuals can issue from one human heart. She leaves behind her husband and 12 yesomim who are following in her way. Kevurah took place at the Sanhedria cemetery of Yerushalyim.

To post or not to post?

Images and videos of Arab terrorists stabbing and murdering Jews R''L  have never been seen so instantaneous and live as in previous intafada. The frum websites and social media, whatsapp etc.. are one upping each other over who can post graphic pictures, videos and bloody gory content faster. Yeshiva world news posted in the name of an anonymous Rabbi  justifying why they posted a video of an arab terrorist butchering to death a frum yid after running him over on Malchei Yisrael street in the Geula neighborhood. At least they were nice enough to post the viewer descretion is advised warning. The anonymous Rabbi, compares us to Moshe Rabbeinu who had to see for himself the cheit haeigel. Perhaps hits and ratings also go into account , but the frum print media has never printed these images in years past. Does the fact that its online change the dynamics. Yes, the world can now see Jewish blood spilled in the streets of Yerushalayim, Yes seeing is believing, but if you choose to share it with the world it should not be an anonymous Rabbi who paskens this sheila.

Six months Winter Zman begins in the Yeshiva world

In these days we need the koach haTorah to protect us.
Winter Zman, or "Vinter zman" is well underway in the Yeshiva world, for thousands of yeshiva Bochurim and youngeleit, Its the longest uninterrupted zman of the year. This year 5776 being a leap year extends the zman another month making it a full six months zman. It began Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan and ends in the begining of Chodesh Nissan.

Many yeshivos learn the yeshivishe mesechtos of Noshim and Nezikin, the shvere Sugyos of shas. It is a Zman were many have shteiged, were many can look back years later and point to that winter zman where they reached new levels of learning.

The yeshiva year consists  of three zmanim, Elul Zman, Winter Zman and Summer zman. Winter zman is the zman most crucial zman of the three. The long stretch without interruption coupled with long winter nights have enabled many to accomplish and grow in Torah.

Despite Violence, Parents Send Children To Eretz Yisrael for New Zman

Hamodia-Despite the spate of violent and, in some cases, fatal attacks, R”l, that have gripped Eretz Yisrael in recent weeks, New York-area parents remained steadfast in their decision to send children to study in yeshivos and seminaries there.

“I’m not so nervous,” said the mother of a student studying at Nachlas Bais Yaakov Seminary. “A lot of my friends in the same position are much more worried, and my daughter asked why I wasn’t. I guess I feel it could happen anywhere. You could get hit by a car crossing the street also.”

The mother added that her daughter’s seminary had been on lockdown for the past few days, with students’ movements limited to the campus and group outings arranged by the faculty.

Understandably, many parents have made greater efforts to keep track of their children’s whereabouts and limit their travel. “I make sure that he calls me every day so I know where he is and he has two brothers living there — they keep on top of him — so he’s under observation,” said Blimi Stein, whose son is studying in Yeshivas Torah v’Yirah in Beit Shemesh.

Firebomb in Manhattan not aimed at Yeshiva students

The firebomb attack which took place in Manhattan on Friday did not target two yeshiva students but rather the manager of a nearby food-cart storage business, it emerged on Monday.

Original reports indicated that an unidentified man had tossed a firebomb inside a Snapple bottle at two yeshiva students as they stood on a Midtown sidewalk on W. 37th St. near 9th Ave. last Friday.

But, speaking on Monday to the Gothamist blog, NYPD Spokesman Sgt. Lee Jones said that someone had gotten into an argument with a manager at the nearby food vendor before the attempted attack.

World Is Silent As Israel Bleeds

YERUSHALAYIM  Hamodia- Three separate stabbing attacks were carried out by Palestinian terrorists in Israel on Wednesday—in the Old City of Yerushalayim, Petach Tikvah and Kiryat Gat.

In the course of the day, thirteen Israeli civilians, soldiers and police were injured from knives, firebombs and rocks. B’chasdei Shamayim, no one was killed.
Palestinian sources reported two dead and as many as 200 injured.

It was a day on which the often-asked question of whether to label the ongoing violence an Intifada or not seemed increasingly a matter of semantics, as the whole country turned into a battleground. While much of the violence until now has been confined largely to Yerushalayim, particularly Har Habayis, and Yehuda and Shomron, on Wednesday it spread to cities in central and southern Israel.

Near the Kosel, an 18-year-old Palestinian woman stabbed an Israeli man, wounding him lightly. He then drew a gun and shot the woman, seriously wounding her, police said. Both were evacuated to a hospital. Police noted that the incident occurred after authorities lifted some of the tight security measures imposed in the capital.
