Statement of Agudath Israel of America on Murder During a Shabbos Service in a Pittsburgh Synagogue

Statement of Agudath Israel of America on Murder During a Shabbos Service in a Pittsburgh Synagogue

The murder of eleven people during a Shabbos service this morning in a Pittsburgh synagogue is a horrific tragedy and an outrage.  Our deepest sympathies go out to the mourning families and friends of the victims who were targeted because they were Jews. We extend our deepest  gratitude to the law enforcement personnel who arrived at the scene and captured the murderer. We  also thank law enforcement across the country who are ramping up security measures around houses of worship.

There  are simply no words of condemnation that can truly express our anguish and disgust at the perpetrator of this hate-fueled act or others like it. Any platform or group, including those on social media,  that serves to stir up and metastasize bigotry and anti-Semitic hatred, needs to be called out and shut down for incitement of violence. Until all Americans confront the horror of anti-Semitism head on, our great Democracy will not have achieved its promise.

May those who were injured in today's senseless violence  have a speedy and complete recovery from their wounds.

Agudah launches "The Yom Hashishi Torah Video Series"

When describing Hashem completion of creation, the Torah says, “vayehi erev vayehi boker yom Hashishi - And it was evening and it was morning The sixth day.” Why the emphasis of The Sixth Day an emphasis given to no other of the seven days of creation?
Rashi quotes the famous chazal that explains that although Hashem seemingly finished creating the world, the creation wasn’t fully stable. Creation was conditional on a key component - Torah which would be given on THE sixth day, the sixth day of Sivan, more than 2000 years later. And, once the Torah was given, creation is dependent on its study. As long as Torah is studied every second of time, the world continues to exist as a result.

The Yom Hashishi series is dedicated to those who study the daf every day and their wives and families who support them. With self-sacrifice and dedication, no matter if it’s 10 below zero or 104 degrees, no matter if its raining or snowing or if they’re traveling or busy, the Daf must get learned.  They learn with candles during hurricanes and little reading lamps of airplanes busses and trains. Some wake up at 4:00 AM and some stay up till 2:00 AM. It doesn’t matter how when or where, they learn The Daf.

Statement of Agudath Israel of America on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court

Agudath Israel of America, a national Orthodox Jewish organization, welcomes President Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy.  Judge Kavanaugh possesses the qualities necessary to assume a seat on the nation's highest court.

He is a man of great intellect and intelligence, and he has exhibited the temperament that results in judicious and well-reasoned rulings. His scholarship and extensive public service on the U.S. Court of Appeals have provided him expertise in a wide array of legal  areas.

We will review Judge Kavanaugh's opinions over the next few weeks and will follow the Senate proceedings closely. As Americans of faith, we will be especially focused on his views on religious liberty and we are, at our initial reading, gratified to  see that Judge Kavanaugh has given due deference to the protection of free exercise, and has advocated for partnership between government and religious institutions in addressing society's needs. We are particularly pleased by Judge Kavanaugh's sensitivity when, in private practice, he represented a Jewish congregation pro bono in a zoning dispute, as such ordinances are increasingly becoming an area of conflict for Jews in many localities.

Agudath Israel has every reason to believe that, in this and other areas of jurisprudence, this distinguished nominee has fairly and accurately interpreted the law.

The Senate should extend Judge Kavanaugh every courtesy and consideration, even as it explores his rulings and constitutional philosophy.

Today news reports of Russian Warships laden with tanks, military trucks and armoured patrol boats sail towards the Middle East. Russian battleships passed through the Dardanelles en route to the Mediterranean, heading to the Russian naval base at Tartus on the north Syrian coast.

Rav Moshe Shternbuch shlita a great Grandson of the Vilna Gaon  received a closely guarded secret that came to him from Rabbi Yitzchak Chever zatza”l, who received it from Rabbi Chaim of Volozhyn zatza”l, who received it from the Gaon of Vilna himself, who revealed it shortly before his death:  “When you hear that the Russians have captured the city of Crimea, you should know that the times of the Messiah have started, that his steps are being heard. And when you hear that the Russians have reached the city of Constantinople (today’s Istanbul), you should put on your Shabbat clothes and don’t take them off, because it means that the Mashiach is about to come any minute.”

NEW YORK (JTA) — Six-time NBA All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire has launched a line of kosher-for-Passover Israeli wines. The 6-foot-10 former player, who returned earlier this month from a trip to the Jewish state, spoke glowingly about the wines and his connection to Israel at a news conference here Tuesday. “It’s a blessing for me and my family to be able to produce such great wines from a land like the land of Israel, so we’re constantly counting our blessings for that,” Stoudemire told reporters at the Jewish National Fund House on the Upper East Side. Stoudemire, 35, said he had been in talks with the Israel Wine Producers Association for three years about making an Israeli wine and realized the opportunity when he relocated to the country in 2016 to play for the Israeli team Hapoel Jerusalem. He retired from basketball last year after helping lead Hapoel Jerusalem to the Israeli Basketball League Cup. “Once I moved to Israel, it was the perfect connection to meet with the vineyards and go to the tastings and figure out the different blends for each bottle,” said Stoudemire,
