As a single who has used single websites, I feel the need to make an important point. A shadchan is always the best. Not necessarily a professional shaddchan. A friend, neighbor, acquaintance ect. who knows both parties, is really best.
On shidduch websites, I find that girls don't take it seriously, and therefore don't even respond. The same complaint has been made by girls about guys.
Frumster/Jwed has a forum. On their forum, the owner of their website admitted (in a thread called "Data on Plus response-rates...", now on page 14 or 15 of their forum) that the response rate to emails are between 26% and 30.8%.
That means that 7 out of ten times, when you contact someone, they won't even respond! (And those who do respond, a lot are rejection letters. But that's understandable and respectful.)
My experience with ZZ hasn't too much better. Most girls did not respond to my emails. Although I definitely had a higher response rate than 30%.
With a live, real person (a shadchan), everyone responds.
