Why use a Picture of Animal Rights Activists When talking About Kashrus of Chicken

Ami Magazine this week ran a story  "Battle of the Birds"covering the latest controversy over the Braekel chicken. In the magazine edition and online they used a accompanying photo of a animal rights activist who advocates against the Kapparot ritual.  The Photo is found on his website. Its most probably a oversight by an editor but it makes an interesting observation.

  1. The kaparot ritual is opposed by:
    Rambam, Rashba, Shulchan Aruch,
    and the Mishnah Berurah commentary
on Orach Chaim, Siman 605, Sif 1.

When non-Orthodox Jews or non-Jews see Jews performing the kaparot ritual, this lowers their opinion of Torah and Jews, which is the definition of Chillul HaShem. How can the kaparot ritual atone for our sins, considering that it is a Chillul HaShem? It can’t!

  2. Why publicize this if no one would have been the wiser?

Just in case it was actually intentional, they now know that it will noted the next time that think of pandering to that type of group.

  3. Beth Yosef, Chelek Orach Chaim, Siman 605: quotes the Rashba in a responsa who, after mentioning the custom prevalent in his city, writes:

“And I have heard that Rabbeinu Hai was asked and said that they observe this, but with all this I prevented this custom.

And it is written in Orchot Chaim that the Ramban forbids it because of Darchei HaEmori”.

Kapparot is not consistent with Jewish teachings and law. Repentance and charity can be better accomplished by using money instead of a slaughtered chicken.”

Why should we, specifically on the eve of the holy day of Yom Kippur, be cruel to animals for no reason, and slaughter them without mercy, just as we are to request compassion from the Living G_d?

  5. I'm surprised that you haven't posted the story surrounding the secret sale & attempted demolition of the shul on 12th Ave. and 41st St. so a private real estate developer can construct a 6 story condo building there.. It's a geferliche chillul hashem with absolutely no heter and supposwedly an "anonymous" Rav behind the activity.

Please post it. Klal yisroel has to be moiche!
