Rav Matisyahu Solomon calls on American Bnei Torah to refrain and not take sides and get involved in situation in Eretz Yisrael

Despite the attempt by some newspapers and individuals to spread the Machlokes here in the American Yeshiva world. The gedolei Roshei yeshiva in the US are calling on the yeshiva world not to take sides or get involved in the current situation in the Torah world in EY. Mnay youngeleit here in the US are seeking guidance from the gedolim how to understand and react.
Rav Matisyahu Solomon

According to a source, (received via email) the Lakewood Mashgiach Rav Mattisyahu Solomon spoke recently in Lakewoood yeshiva Beth Medrash Govoha. The Mashgiach mentioned there are differences of opinion and chilukei daos. B'H it has not penetrated the olam hatorah in America. The mashgiach said, that in previous generations the olam haTorah always went along with the midah of emes vehashalom ehavu even in times of great machlokes we can have chilukei daois but the end result is to respect one another just as was the case with Bais Shammai and Bais Hillel despite their great differences- in some cases a woman would be assur to get married according to bais shammai never the less they did not refrain from marrying each other. They held their own but the end result was seeking the truth and shalom, not who can win.

The mashgiach said, each generation had gedolim that we all looked up and never had the thought to question or start up with these heiliger gedolim. Its hashems Torah, daas torah of gedolei torah whose daas is kuloi torah even if they are mechulak with one another. To go ahead and make a zilzul of it, that, said the mashgiach  belongs on the street not in the bais hamedrash.

Our job, said the mashgiach is not to be mekabel any Lashon Hora that's going around, but the opposite to know that we are bnei torah we only know the way the Torah has showed us. Wherever there is machlokes the end must be only for shalom. Hashem should help that each one should hold his own but the end result is not a victory. We are not ones to take sides and decide who we follow we must guard ourselves strongly not to create any downfalls in the bais medrash.

  1. This is a common refrain among rabbonim and RY who don't want the people to get involved - and for good reason.

The core problem with this approach is that the actual combatants in this matter - as with many other matters of this sort - are themselves major gedolim. And they are saying pretty clearly that they don't respect the other side and that they are not looking for shalom. So deciding to respect everyone and that the machlokis is not a proper approach amounts to picking and choosing from the words of gedolim, accepting what we like and rejecting what we don't like.

    It's a conundrum.

What I do strongly agree with is the need to distinguish between what gedolim are saying and what lesser people supposedly on their side are saying or doing. Also, in making sure your information is accurate. But saying "let's just ignore what all these gedolim are saying and declare valid our own perspective on the situation - which none of these gedolim share" - is improper and illogical.

  3. Hebrew translation

  4. Based on a shmuz personally heard from Rav Matisyohu recently, he most certainly is on a certain side of the machlokes and therefore has good reason for not wanting to import it to a climate where Rabbonim will not be afraid to speak out..
