Attacking the yeshiva world

Once again you would think you are reading one of those anti frum self hating blogs, than, you catch yourself this is posted on YWN by none other than Rabbi Yair Hoffman. A after the fact post about the dangerous drinking practices of yeshiva bochurim. It was such a great piece that FM was more than elated to post it. If Yair Hoffman is sooo in the know of what goes on in the yeshiva world and up to date with today's yeshiva Bochurim why didn't he post this BEFORE Purim and reach out to all Roshei yeshiva in a massive awareness campaign to prevent what was about to happen. Why after the fact go publicize a bashing article with absolutely no facts to back any of it up. As one commenter posted "How come Yair Hoffman is aware of this “prevalent” nightmare scenario playing out in yeshivos everywhere, while I and those I know who've been in yeshiva their entire lives never heard anything remotely close to this scenario"
As the left always  love to do, take an extreme case and paintbrush the entire yeshiva world  with the same problem and shortcoming. Does Yair Hoffman not know of the thousands of yeshiva bochurim who give up their purim to collect tzedaka for other needy causes. That they make a kiddush hashem and behave like true bnei Torah. Does YWN not know of the thousands of heiliger yeshiva boichurim who drink responsibly and act as bnei Torah even when they are drunk! Does YH not know of  the moderation system in place by many Roshei Yeshiva who make sure the bochurim act as proper bnei Torah ??

Its foolish  to sit behind a keyboard and mock a beautiful system not having a clue of what goes on.  But in the blog world (and sadly yeshiva world news chose to post it) bashing charedim their way of life and the yeshivos is what scores points for you and the left cheers you on.

  1. Perhaps the difference is between the yeshivas you attend and those Yair Hoffman attended or his target audience attends.

He does write primarily for the 5TJT. a very different constituency than what you experienced.

  2. Mr Tomim,

You are making a mockery of yourself and your site.
It is foolish to sit behind your keyboard and mock the issues that are present in yeshivas, especially when they border on Pikuach Nefesh, while not having a clue of what goes on.

Nothing to back him up? Did you not see every Hatzola and Chaveirim in the world post advertisements warning people "not to get carried away"? Why did they do that? Perhaps it has happened in the past. Did you not see vomit on the floor near Yeshivos and Shuls- I most certainly did!

While bashing the "Yeshiva System" may be unwise- arguing that what happens on Purim overall in Yeshivas and with collecting bochurim is 'heilig', is a bit of a stretch. While I'm sure many bochurim act refined- many don't. And their acts are not exactly Kiddush Hashem material.

As you always do- take a paintbrush and make it like the Yeshiva World is hunky dory. While overall things are great- there are issued to be had.

And if you can share with us some moderation systems in place by Roshei Yeshiva that they can actual control while their bochurim are not present in the Yeshiva- that would be a good start to stop being foolish.

  3. Hatzolah ads and geared to the general public, yet YH twists it as if only Yeshiva Bochurim have a drinking problem. If its a matter of pikuach nefesh, let the Roishei Yeshiva and Rebbeim deal with it not Yair Hoffman. Why is he mixing in? how many yeshivos did he visit on Purim?

  4. The question is, at what point would you say it would ever be worthwhile for YH to have penned the article? When would be the tipping point? Everyone is in agreement that we should not badmouth Yeshivos, chalilah. They are the life blood of Klal Yisroel. On the other hand, there are hundreds of hatzalah calls. You say "if it is a matter of pikuach nefesh, let the RY and Rebbeim deal with it," But they admit that it is beyond their hands.. Any issue of pikuach nefesh needs to be dealt with, which was exactly his point.

  5. the name Yeshiva world news is VERY misleading. They are very anti yeshiva, pro chabad, pro football, pro Jay Leno, anti kollel, pro Y.U. and have writers like the Yair Hoffman types who call themselves "Rabbi" but are anything but.
He reminds me of Avi Weiss. just worse, cus he wears a black hat and beard, yet krum like a pretzel....

    1. It is well known that "yeshiva" world news has very little in common with basic REAL yeshiva world and bnei torah hashkafic views. Super Bowl updates, comedy videos, "coffee room" chat room with every piece of shmutz analyzed, celebrity analysis etc. Basically news that involves issues that most REAL yeshiva would hide from they're kids.
YWN needs to be exposed for faking and disguising itself under a name that is extremely misleading.
It is a mitzvah to expose it....

    2. sadly its not only YWN that has little to do with the real yeshiva world, Matzav.com and its sister paper the Yated have also moved away from the mainstream yeshiva world. Matzav starting posting for JCW a MO organization on Child abuse. Its posting of sports news and other issues that do not reflect the true Torah world. Once your online its automatically a chisaron.

    3. Your Statemants regarding Matzav and Yated is very true. Rule of thumb is: see who's at the helm and you'll get a pretty good idea of the content. So When it comes to the Yated, its a wonder that the content is not loaded with sports analysis, articles on the latest Youtube clips, Lashon horah, and articles from anti kollel types....
We all know the truth about the ownership.

It is those who believe that their loshon hara is actually a mitzvah, that are the farthest away from 'getting it'. They'll never recognize that their sina isn't the kedusha that they see it as.
