JP The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation backtracked on Thursday after announcing they would get rid of a four-hour window called “Women’s Swim,” which has specifically accommodated Orthodox Jewish women.
Numerous complaints were lodged at the Metropolitan Pool and Recreation Center in Williamsburg for the “separate swimming hours” program, saying they were discriminatory, the New York Post reported.
New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind criticized the decision to close the separate swimming program.
“What happened to being culturally sensitive?” Hikind said in a statement. “I thought we were in the midst of a ‘Progressive Era,’ where we do everything we can to be more accepting of cultural differences.”
Hikind said it was preposterous that the city was considering the program discriminatory.
The Jewish community has a restriction that men and women swim separately, as a sign of modesty.
After public officials got involved, the Parks Department announced that the separate swimming hours program at the Williamsburg pool was not closing. The women-only swimming schedule will resume as is every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:15 a.m. — 10:45 a.m.
“I’m so thrilled to learn that the Parks Department will be continuing this separate swimming hours program,” Hikind said in a statement. “It is a major victory for the people, and the community can rest much easier this Shabbos knowing that men and women can continue to swim separately.”

I have tried to counter this trend by publicizing pro-Israel websites – not because I think it will solve the entire problem, or even one-tenth of the problem, but because it is the only thing I can do, and every little it helps,

Hopefully something was learned from this episode. Next time women should be sent to demand separate hours instead of men. When men go, it's sexist.
