Attacking those who wear Black hats and shaitels to an audience in the secular forward newspaper

A recent Article written by a frum columnist and writer published in the secular forward newspaper is quite disturbing. The author writes about frum Jews who live intense Jewish lives they dress and do everything Jewish yet only because that's what everyone else does. To quote him:
“Cultural Orthodox Jews,” a phrase I coined for people who eat only rabbinically supervised foods, wear black hats (or wigs), pray in synagogue daily and send their kids to yeshivas — but all, and only because, that’s what everyone in their community does. Such “COJs” may or may not believe in the Creator, but if they do, they don’t give Him much thought — even while living seemingly intense Jewish lives.
The author goes on to say that the greater contemporary challenge to the Orthodox world, I think, lies in the COJ phenomenon. The problem of doing things by rote as the article mentions is nothing new. Who has not heard a mussar shmuze about mitvos anashim melumada. How does this author go ahead and write an article making fun and disparaging so many frum yidden? Did he not hear of the concept of emunah peshuta that people live with not everything having to be understood. There are many levels of observance, does a yiddisher mammeh who clings to her tehillim and cook for shabbos and bake challah, keeps taharas hamishpacha and raises a beautiful mishpacha, yet not have a deep understanding of the mitzvos is she in the category of COJs? What about the
young yeshiva bochurim who have a long life ahead of them to learn and delve deeper into Torah and mitzvos, yet they are ovdei hashem with all their heart and mind at the current stage of their life, are they also COJs?
Perhaps the author was only bringing out a point, does he have to do it in the most hateful venue and use a self hating newspaper who all they do is attack frum yidden at every opportunity? Look at the comments to the article how much hate and bizoy gedolim are mentioned there. Look at the chilul hashem generated from the articleby the bashers of torah and mitzvosvie the comment section. If he feels its a problem let him come to our shuls and yeshivos and speak about it. To attack frum yidden in the enemy territory is shocking disturbing and offensive. Not just that, but during the three weeks a time where we are looking to work on sinas chinom not cause more machlokes and give fodder to the sonei torah.

  1. "Did he not hear of the concept of emunah peshuta that people live with not everything has to be understood."

Emunoh pshutoh is not the same as mitzvas anoshim melumodoh.

According to you, that they are the same, how can the novi, in ישעיה כט, יג, say, from הקב"ה, that יען כי נגש העם הזה בפיו ובשפתיו כבדוני ולבו רחק ממני ותהי יראתם אתי מצות אנשים מלמדה? Are you going to write a blog post against the novi now?

What is being criticized is people who are not trying to improve their avodas Hashem. One may not understand everything, but one should be trying to make their avodah more meaningful.

The one who wrote the piece is an ehrliche Yid, a fine talmid chochom and an oived Hashem, and you should be dan him lekaf zechus.

    1. why should anyone be dan him lekaf zechus when he isn't dan anyone else lekaf zechus? he's also the same guy who looks up to bernie madoff and thinks sully the pilot is an awful guy.

  2. I think such shallow reading of the article is possible through the lens of someone who is not a maamin, which was surely the intent of Tomim Ti. Surely the substance of the article is indisputable. No one confuses sincere Avodah, albeit unsophisticated, with "orthopraxy". Presumably the reason to have such an article in the Forward is to illustrate what we (Frum community) strive for, but it is interesting he feels the Forward is an appropriate place for such an article.

    1. "No one confuses sincere Avodah, albeit unsophisticated, with "orthopraxy". Does the author mean to say most frum yidden are not sincere but label them as orthopraxy? He fails to mention any statistic or number but magnifies it as a huge problem facing the klal. To the authors own admission, he could not get this article posted in any frum newspaper or venue. Why?? why did he run to the hateful secular Forward and bashmutz frum yidden there

  3. Look at the picture the Forward posted along with the article. A chasidishe couple walking down the street pushing a baby stroller are they orthoprax????

    1. That's exactly the point.

Yes, that couple might APPEAR to be a "chassidishe couple" but at least one of the two might, unfortunately R"L L"A, be someone who is going through the motions but does not really believe in this whole lifestyle even though s/he has no problem living it.

I'm not sure why he chose the Forward as the vehicle for this essay, but the point remains. Unlike in generations past, where many Jews had emunah peshuta but didn't really know much, etc. nowadays there are Jews who do know a fair amount and are, therefore, comfortable living a frum or chassidic lifestyle but are essentially orthoprax.

This is yet one more reason we desperately need the geulah.

    2. Obviously, the photo was a "stock photo" and perhaps not even intended to represent chassidus per se but rather the general concept of outwardly observant but, despite that appearance, inwardly empty, CH"V.

    3. So now each and every yid you see is choshud for being an orthoprax or a kofer?? FEH! Shame on this article for defaming an entire tzibbur of yirei hashem. How foolish can the author be to use the Forward as a vehicle for his rant against frum Jews. Agudah attacked Rabbi sacks now lets see them take on their own PR man.

  4. Whoa, I didn't dream for a second that Tomim Ti was denying the content of the article. Time to wake up and smell the coffee. Aside from (even "average" )Yungerleit who are holding in learning, this problem is rampant.

  5. I thought the Agudas increasing closeness to mizrachi ideals was only with regards to Israel...
